Defibrillator Installed At Cookstown Nightclub

Mid Ulster Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) in conjunction with Time Bar & Venue Cookstown has installed a defibrillator on the outside wall of the popular Mid Ulster nightclub.

A defibrillator is potentially a life-saving electrical device that automatically diagnoses and treats life threating cardiac arrhythmias. And having a lifesaving defibrillator on site can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved. It is essential for ensuring that quick action is taken in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest.

Indeed recent press reports have highlighted how invaluable they are in helping to save lives as they play a very important role in restoring normal heart rhythm until emergency services arrive.

Defibrillators are generally lightweight, battery-operated, portable devices that are easy to use. Sticky pads with sensors are attached to the chest of the person who is having a sudden cardia arrest. Using a defibrillator to shock the heart within minutes of the attack may restore a normal heart rhythm. Every minute counts - each minute that passes without intervention leads to a 10 percent reduction in survival.

Chair of the PCSP, Cllr Frances Burton said, “As soon as someone has a heart attack and goes into cardiac arrest the clock is ticking. Therefore installation of this life saving equipment could be the best investment ever made. I wish to commend everybody involved in this initiative, particularly, Brendan McCusker, Manager of Time Bar and Venue, for agreeing to have the defibrillator installed on their outside wall.”

Brendan McCusker from Time Bar and Venue said, “We are delighted to be working with Mid Ulster PCSP in trying to make the night time economy safer in Cookstown. We are more than happy to support the installation of the defibrillator outside our premises and it will be well worth if it is needed in an emergency.”

PSNI Sector Inspector, Daniel Walsh also commented: “The PSNI recognises Time as a very suitable location to site the defibrillator. The defibrillator is very easy to use. It has a fully automated system which means that when someone calls 999, the ambulance control room can give them a code to unlock the defibrillator and then verbal instructions will be given as to how to use the defibrillator. It will be available to use 24 hours a day.”

Mid Ulster PCSP will soon be installing a defibrillator in Dungannon town Centre and have previously installed one in Magherafelt town Centre.
